WTT December 10

Showing good form, the Alamogordo ACES WTT 4.0 team played at home on Saturday December 10 against the Las Cruces Dynamos. Alamo won by a total point score of 32-24.

December Playday

Thank you to Diane and Lee for sponsoring the December play day under difficult conditions. Because not everyone could play the same number of sets due to the condition of the courts, the play day prize winners were determined by a random drawing. We all also showed off our singing skills by singing a tennis version of The Twelve Days of Christmas.

It was also great to see Harold out on the courts again!

Turkey Winners

Which one looks the most like a real turkey? Write the name of the player pictured above who looks the most like a real turkey on a canned food and bring it to the tennis shed to cast your vote.

2011 Turkey Shoot

Everyone had a great time at the 2011 Turkey Shoot, in spite of some outside interference, as can be seen in the pictures.

Message from our President:
Congratulations to today's Turkey winners: Diane, Laurie, Wolfgang and Dale. All I can say is, you're all a bunch of turkeys!!. Nice going.

Thank you Ken and Neoma for hosting and thank you Raymond for rescuing the turkeys from Ken and Neoma's car.

As mentioned at the courts this morning, we'd like to start a canned food drive for the rest of this month and into December. Just one canned food item would be greatly appreciated, or if you'd rather give a $$ donation, that would be fine too. We plan to donate all we collect to a local soup kitchen, (to be named later).

Where to bring/leave your canned food item? There will be a designated box inside the shed at the tennis courts. You may leave your item here, or should you wish to give a $$ donation, you may give it to Raymond or me. We appreciate your generosity.

Report from World Team Tennis matches

This report on our WTT teams comes from Janet Santackas:
"The Roadrunners," our 3.5 team lost two close matches, there were some flashes of brilliance and lots of hopefulness for future matches. They lost their first match 26-32 and their second, 26-28. It was a learning experience and they are looking forward to their next match. This was Alamo RoadRunners first match and as of today they are tied for 2nd place.

The Alamo Aces, the 4.0 team, came out strong. There were some great shots made by many and we won our first match 36 games to 16. The second match we lost by 3 games, 28-31, these were the Aces' first two matches and it left us in 2nd place.

Call for WTT teams

Hi all!

For World Team Tennis:

If you would like to play and don’t have a team go here: http://www.wttrec.com/recleag/league_info.asp?s=740&t=1&l=4614&f=2022&shw=reg and select “Participant – I need to be placed on a team” when prompted. If I don’t have a team for you by the time the season starts, I will switch your registration to Substitute. Or you can sign up as a sub. Subs pay only $5, no matter how many times they end up playing during the season. But then again, there is no guarantee they will get to play at all.

Middle School Tennis

ATA mid school tennis program, offered through the combined efforts of NMSU-A Community Ed
and ATA, finished up mid September. In four weeks, excellent progress was seen in the 20 participants who were taught by 10 ATA volunteers, headed by Cameron Brace Emmert, lead instructor. Cameron's simple instructions and format, paired with kids each hitting hundreds of balls each session, resulted in student success! Special thanks to other ATA volunteers: Rick B, Bernice, John W, Linda, John & Evelyn, Janet, Laurie, and Grady. This is the 4th year that ATA/NMSU-A has offered this program.

October 2011 Alamogordo Tennis Association Closed Tournament

Click here for an entry form to the Alamogordo Tennis Association closed tournament, to be held October 22-23. To participate, one must be either a member of the ATA, a resident of Otero County, or serving in the military.

Physical entry forms will be available September 16 at the courts in Alamogordo and at Holloman AFB.

Tennis Ladder

Janet Santackas is surveying players to find out how many would be interested in participating in tennis ladders.

To participate in a tennis ladder, one would need to be willing to play one match per week against the opponent he or she is paired with on the ladder. As the administrator of the ladder, Janet would be responsible to read the weekly match results as recorded by the competitors and then change the rankings accordingly.

For example, if Joe was ranked third, he would play the fourth ranked player. The winning player moves up in ranking on the ladder and the loser moves down.

Please let Janet know if you are interested in playing on a ladder, either in singles or doubles, call Janet at 415-3634 or talk to her at the courts!

Middle School Program

Plans are being solidified for the ATA/ NMSU-A Community Education Middle School Tennis Program to be offered to students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades this fall.

This will be the 4th year that ATA has offered thiscommunity service program which helps introduce young players to tennis and also helps prepare interested players for the high school team.

Cameron Brace-Emmert will be the lead instructor this year, and the program will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 4 weeks, beginning Aug. 23rd, from 5:00-6:30 PM.

ATA volunteers are needed to help with instruction. This is a good opportunity for ATA to show our appreciation to the community for our courts and to promote tennis in Alamogordo. Please give this serious consideration. If you can help out (all or some of the sessions) please contact John White or Evelyn Genta.

Cameron will be conducting a training session for volunteers on Thursday, Aug. 18 (the week before we start the program) from 5:00-6:30 to show us how he wants to teach each skill and what drills he uses to do so.

Las Cruces Exchange

Harold, Cathy, Anke and Sabine B enjoy some KFC.
From Evelyn Genta, the coordinator of the Las Cruces Exchange:

Just to bring you up to speed---

Alamo sort of beat up on Las Cruces yesterday with final tally after singles results came in at 20 matches won by ATA to 5 by LC. Play went smoothly with almost everyone able to play 2 matches; each match was a pro set. 24 ATA players made the drive, and Las Cruces had just a few more, so play involved 50+ players. They sort of goofed up when they set the date, as many of their men players were at sectionals in Albuquerque. I doubt if they make that mistake again. Everyone was very gracious, and I believe everyone had a good time. LC provided chicken for lunch and we finished off around noon.
I appreciated Diane's help with the desk, which made it more enjoyable for those of us trying to organize.

I have the trophy and will get it inscribed before I give it to Sandy to remount on our door.

Work Day-- We Need Your Help!!

We will have a work day - on Thursday March 17, starting at 8:30.
This will involve completing some court maintenance in order to keep our courts in good condition. If we have fourteen workers, the following projects can be completed in just two hours:
* Secure windscreens with zip ties and wire.
* Caulk the joints on the south facing hitting wall.
* Fill the groove between tennis court material and the cement walkway along courts 1 & 3 (This will prevent cracks in the concrete caused by frozen water expansion.)
If you have a caulking gun, please bring it with you. All other supplies will be provided.
Please study your Thursday March 17 schedule and let us know at alamotennis@gmail.com if you will be available to work.
