Local tennis
icon Tom Springer celebrated his recovery from recent heart surgery by winning
another title, in the 70-year-old age bracket of this year's Alamogordo Open.
Springer, a former college player and a retired physicist, has won many
awards, including Southwest Section player of the year. Cameron
Brace-Emmert defeated Edward Maidment of Roswell to take the Men's Open title.
Brace-Emmert played for the Alamogordo Tigers and recently became a
USPTA certified tennis coach. Richard Vickrey and Floyd Ransom of Las
Cruces won the Men's Open doubles competition; Cindy Carey and Lois Whitmire
of Ruidoso dominated in women's doubles. Miguel Carter II and Eric Roche
finished first and second in the youth competition.
Eighty players from four states participated in the tournament, played on April 20th and 21st. Players were grouped by age categories, NTRP ratings and an open category for the highest skill level.
The following are the results of event finals:
Men's 50 doubles: Leon Redman and Steven Huebner of Roswell def. Dziamka Kaz and Rudy Trujillo of Glenwood, Colorado.
Men's 50 Singles: Michael Herrera of Albuquerque def. Steven Huebner of Roswell.
Men's 60 Singles: Bob Scott of Albuquerque def. Dziamka Kaz
NTRP Men's Open: Miguel Carter of El Paso def. Rudy Trujillo of Glenwood, Colorado.
NTRP Men's Open Doubles: John Genta and Rick Sotak of Alamogordo def. Jeff Murray and Jeff Lazar of Phoenix.
Mixed Open Doubles: Cameron Brace-Emmert and Cindy Carey def. Richard Vickrey and Martha Trost of Las Cruces
Mixed 50 Doubles: Sal Olayo and Janet Santackas of Alamogordo def. Roger Larson and Melinda Mosser of Albuquerque.
Mixed NTRP Open: Darryl and Joy Gallent of Alamogordo def. Mark King and Lois Whitmire of Ruidoso.
NTRP Mixed 6.0: Allen Campbell and Sintra Sampath of Alamogordo def Dale Emmert of Alamogordo and Cathy Waggoner of Cloudcroft.
NTRP Mixed 7.0: Joe and Janet Santackas def. Robert Schreiner and Patsy Comon-Pearce of Alamogordo.
First and second place trophies were beautiful hand made pieces of pottery, made by local artist Rick Sotak.

Alamogordo / Roswell Exchange
June 8th is the date.
Roswell is very excited to get back to the exchange. Saturday, June 8th, Roswell is coming here, the ATA will provide lunch, but first we need to get players. If you are interested in playing, please send an email to the ATA or tell a board member. Format: men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles with a twist.
