Middle School Program

Plans are being solidified for the ATA/ NMSU-A Community Education Middle School Tennis Program to be offered to students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades this fall.

This will be the 4th year that ATA has offered thiscommunity service program which helps introduce young players to tennis and also helps prepare interested players for the high school team.

Cameron Brace-Emmert will be the lead instructor this year, and the program will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 4 weeks, beginning Aug. 23rd, from 5:00-6:30 PM.

ATA volunteers are needed to help with instruction. This is a good opportunity for ATA to show our appreciation to the community for our courts and to promote tennis in Alamogordo. Please give this serious consideration. If you can help out (all or some of the sessions) please contact John White or Evelyn Genta.

Cameron will be conducting a training session for volunteers on Thursday, Aug. 18 (the week before we start the program) from 5:00-6:30 to show us how he wants to teach each skill and what drills he uses to do so.

Thursdays in Cloudcroft

Some ATA players have decided to play tennis on Thursday mornings at 9:00 in Cloudcroft during the hot summer months. Anyone is welcome to join us, and play will be like the T/Th play.

Last week some players went to the Sr. Citizen center for lunch which is only $2. They request reservations by 8:00 a.m. If interested in lunch, phone 682-3022; reservations can be made any time of day.

Mixed Doubles in Ruidoso!!

Our friends in Ruidoso are organizing a Mixed Doubles Mixer in Ruidoso on Saturday, July 16, from 9:00 to noon. They have 4 teams from Ruidoso and would like us to bring up 4 teams from Alamogordo. If you are interested in playing, please contact me, Evelyn Genta, at 437-2072, or jegenta@hotmail.com. Please do not respond to this email as I do not check the ATA email. This should be a good time.

Carlsbad Tournament Results

At the Cavern City Adult Open in Carlsbad over the July 4 weekend, some Alamogordo players had good results.

Thomas Springer defeated Grady Nicholson 6-1, 6-2 in the men's 75 singles finals.

Cameron Brace Emmert and his partner Jonathan Candelaria of El Paso played some great tennis, making it to the semifinals in Men's Open Doubles before losing a nail biter to the Loest/Vickery team from Las Cruces, 6-7, 6-1, 6-7. In Men's singles, Cameron lost in the quarterfinals to Marc Avalos of Tucson, 6-3, 6-4.
